2) you must wear your new band tee next practise.
if not, the majors will not hesitate to punish you.

3) move instruments quickly, swiftly.
fall in is at 2.30. after fall in, move your instruments down
to the Ava room. Macho mans please help up in arranging the chairs
straight after school.

4) please practise your pieces.
wednesday is our only practise left, untill our performance on 29th Oct!

1) There will be NO Band training on the 23 Oct, Friday.
Its due to promotion day. So exciting.

Report to band room immediately at 9.40 sharp.
Our first show is at 10.10am, lower sec recess.
The area is a little cramped, so make sure you can see the conductor.

You have to set up instruments & warm up with the band.
Probably go through the songs.
We will leave Hillgrove at 7.15am.
8am starts.

So approximately, reach school by 6.30.
VERY SAFE. Confirm wont late for school one.
Songs will most probably be the same as our Lunch time concert.
Will get back to you guys soon.

2nd Nov, Concert @ De La Salle Primary School
Wooh! So excited. My primary school leh.
But this is not confirmed yet. Mdm Khong will get back to me.
But what so ever happen, the plans will carry out like what we
will do in the LianHua experience.

3rd Nov, Concert @ Chua Chu Kang Primary School

please practise & turn up for ALL practises.

If otherwise, you will not be performing.
This is one of the best ways you earn your CCA points.

I know its weird that i would update this blog right,
but oh well!
The band's blog is a bit dead, so i think i might as well do something about it!

Okay, recently we had our band camp.
& I am quite sure its a huge success.
I enjoyed the Dinner. GREAT FOOD MAN.
But Mr Ong say i have to cut down :(
Sad lah, then you all laugh somemore. Good lah -.-

Band Camp 2009

Preparation for SYF.

The following content will be about our latest news, well not exactly latest. It's about our recent achievement. I know most of us band members don't consider them achievement, but I do. I know deep inside we're definitely better than our previous competition. Don't be too disappointed in the results all hope is not lost. We still can redeem ourselves for the next SYF. It's not that we can't play or we don't have strong musical background. I figured, it's actually our attitude. When we're told we're wrong how many of us actually bothered/took the effort to change?

On 8th April many of us experience butterflies in our tummy. Okay la, not everyone. Only me I guess? I was excited/nervous/scared etc. Mixed feelings.

Anyway, from what I've read from ZhenYu's blog and what WengKin told me, Mr Lee isn't going to renew Mr Ong's contract. On top of the Mdm Khong is retiring soon. How sad can that be?

ATTENTION ATTENTION!

There's a concert held at the Esplanade Concert Hall called the:

European Fair.

It's performed by the West Winds. Band of the Bukit Batok Community Club.

It'll be conducted by Mr Jacob de Haan [He is one of Europe's most popular composers] & Dr Lee Tian Tee.

It's on 29 March 2009, Sunday, 5pm.

The tickets are priced at $12 for Students/Senior Citizens/NSF. The normal ticket are priced at $15/$25.

There is also another concert held at the Victoria Concert Hall called the:

Familiar Classics.

Performed by; Singapore National Youth Sinfonia.

Conducted by, Foo Say Ming.

Tickets are sold at $5. Anyone who wishes to go can book from SISTIC or Syarita.

It's on Sunday, 22 March 2009, 5pm at Victoria Concert Hall.

&& Syarita, our French Hornist, will be performing too! So please go down and support her!

erm, hi?

well, since felicia has mentioned something abt syf being only 30 days away, i might as well comment on the stuff you guys need to work on. all this is according to last friday's practice, March6, when i was there to witness your practice.

firstly, like what felicia has mentioned, is your attitude towards syf. this competition is not easy. band members from secondary schools all over singapore are anticipating this event - representing their schools in a national level, showing off what they can do; what they have learned and experienced in their years in the band. it took 4 years to build hgv band to the silver medal standard in 2005, and just one year for it to deteriorate to a bronze medal in 2007.

from what i see from the practice, you guys dont have that drive - the look of aggression in your eyes, the face that tells me that you WANT this. you have to have that kind of mentality in you. if not you'd just be wasting your time. dont cry when you found out that hgv band once again received a bronze medal, when you know you havent put in your best effort. theres absolutely no point in doing that. hence, this is my advice to you: do your best. if you have put in your 100% in this competition - now being only 30 days away - then you have nothing to worry abt. the silver medal is inevitably yours. i know you guys have potential. so work to it, together!

here're some pointers:

1) make full use of your sectionals.

sectionals are rare in your case. mr ong wants to make sure everyone knows their part well and he feels that it's his responsibility for your progress. so, if you guys have the time, especially on saturdays, have sectionals. section leaders, pls do your part by making sure that EVERY ONE of your section members know how to play. doesnt matter the dynamics and all first - you can do that another time - but emphasise more on your fingerings and tone. seriously, i was shocked to find out that till now, some of you guys dont know your fingerings. esp the running notes. make every note is distinct and dont make it sound messy. after that, coordinate with your section mates. some parts may be different like, clarinet1 plays what &clarinet2 plays what. know when to come in and play as a whole. and most importantly, play confidently. dont hide. youll just lose out in the end.

2) do proper warm-ups before playing any piece

warm-ups are important, dont neglect it. if your realise, after playing a piece without doing your warm-ups before that, your lips (arms for percs) will feel extremely strained. furthermore, youll feel tired halfway through the song, which is, well, not good. it's like running your 2.4km. you dont do stretches = lactic acid produced in your muscles. in layman terms: you'll have muscle aches. so, do warm-ups! long notes are good. and, your tounging exercise and all of that. you'll realise that you'll sound better, in a way, and that you're less tired and able to complete the piece more confidently. now that's an accomplishment.

3) bring home your instrument if you can

since common test is over, might as well you spend some time practising. know your mistakes and work on them to improve. like what mr ong said, there's no point practicing the wrong stuff all over again. so yes, do something! take yingsuean for example. the running notes on xylo for your choice piece is not easy. it takes alot of practice to master that. she's a good example because i and i think all of you were impressed on her improvement. that amount of improvement is enough for me, and perhaps mr ong. i know, its only 30days right, what can you do? PRACTICE. youve free time, so, just do it!

4) respect those who have came back, be it alumni or tutors

okay. you know what happened. so i shant elaborate. nonetheless, you should at most show your respect to those who are willing to take their time to come back and teach you guys. we know your problems and we're here to help. dont waste our time listening to you guys whining abt how tough it is, cos reality bites. if you are not better then your tutor, then at least listen to what he/she has to say, then perhaps youll learn a thing or two. think back the past few months: what have you learnt in this period of syf. is your playing the same/similar standard as when youve started off? if it is, then you need to work doubly hard. cos you'll be the one suffering from multiple 'pokes' from your SL or Mr Ong. appreciate what you have. dont regret later.

5) presentation

like what felicia said, presentation matters. first row girls, pls sit properly. do not slouch. look confident. that implies to everyone else as well. if your playing aint that good, at least you have points for your presentation. that includes uniform. shirts tucked in. girls skirts should be of appropriate length (if not how to sit properly?) percs, stand straight - dont look like an ah-beng on stage. show some style! sway with the music. think pro. if you look smart, you play smart.

so, thats my advice overall. if i return and find out more stuff, ill update it here. nonetheless, if youve just browsed through what ive just said and not take all that into consideration, then you're really being unfair for those who really WANT to get their desired medal. youre a band. youre supposed to work together as a team. same goal. no one gets left behind. and only one medal. you guys decide on what you want.

HEY HEY!

you know what!? :O I haven't really been updating this blog eh? What can I say, I'm a busy person. HAHA!

Anyway, I hope you guys did well for your common test. If you didn't fret not, cause you still have Mid-year. and by that time SYF will be over. It's only awhile more.

PERSEVERANCE IS ALL YOU NEED!

I bet you guys are like thinking, what is she trying to say here la? Well I'm trying to build up the climax la dey. Be a little patient with me can?

Since SYF is coming and Common Test over you all can put your heart and soul into practice. YUP! I think we can actually do well if everyone try. All we need is to be a little more discipline and we have to change our attitude/mindset. We're all in this together!

I shall be random and talk about how we present ourself during performance. So, I think showmanship for any performance is important. That's why we wear similar blazer and all those stuff. Wearing the same shirt is not enough, having nice uniform but rusty instruments is also not presentable right? Thus, we should have like a mass polishing day. Then we can polish our instrument till it's bling-a-licious. When we get to the concert hall the judges will be blinded by how shiny our instrument is and who knows they might award us with higher points.

OMG! Felicia you're like the smartest person ever!

I know I am. But some of the idea were some other band members.

Who knows Mr Ong might be reading this and one fine day during one fine practice he might suggest all of us to have mass polishing. WOAH! ehh like that you all must thank me leh. Make sure when I graduate I get lotsa present. HAHA! I'm just joking.

34th NCO Camp 2008

HELLO BAND MEMBERS!

yesterday, 7/11, was the Band NCO Camp Passing Out Parade for Band Majors and Drum Majors. a few of us managed to attend this auspicious event in order to support our fellow majors, ZiWei &Sabreena in becoming officially known as MAJORS.

according to them, the event is much so memorable; getting to meet new friends, gaining experiences and making links with other school bands. we even saw some old faces, such as the majors from Yuan Ching Sec &also Chung Cheng High (Yishun). here're some of the pictures taken that day.

okay, that's all the pictures i have that are nicely taken. one last message to all band members, work hard for the upcoming syf! practise more on the choice piece; the set-piece's coming up soon, plus the drills - perfect it. show the school our might by getting back our silver award, or perhaps even a gold! all the best! :DDD

14 October 2008 which is marking day.

everyone of you [band members ONLY!] are to go back to school for drills practice. ATTENDANCE IS COMPULSORY you're to be in band T-shirt [red colour] and PE shorts. please note, NO FBT is allowed. for girl who don't wish to wear their PE shorts to school for maybe safety reasons may do so, but have to change to PE shorts when we're doing to drill practice. boys wear PE shorts la, scared what seh? scared I rape you meh? so guys, don't ask me or anybody for that matter if you're allowed to wear school shorts uh. cause it's the same. -.-

Hey! are you guys interested in getting to know more people? from band of course -.-

This coming December holidays, there will be some bonding games cum chalet and all are invited! Details are as follow:

Date: 15 December 2008 - 17 December 2008

Day: Monday - Wednesday

There will be games planned for all of you on the first day, 15 December 2008 (Monday). Also, there will be barbeque session. Band members are encouraged to go and are welcome to stay overnight. However, we would like to stress that this is NOT a school event.

Interested members are to contact Mr. Ho Weng Kin or Miss Tan Shu Qin ASAP, if possible by the end of October.

BALLON HATS FESTIVAL!

Sentosa Balloon Hats Festival

The Sentosa Balloon Hats Festival began in 2004. It is a gathering of local secondary school bands who would do display marches along the beach from Tanjong Beach to Palawan Beach before a mass display event. The participants would wear balloon hats made by themselves and each school comes up with their unique design. At the end of the event, all the students would pop their balloons followed by a release of a large number of balloons into the air. The event began as part of an attempt to create the world record for the gathering of the largest number of balloon hats. But since then, it had developed into a full scale annual event with performances around the whole island before the marching event began.

seriously we should join la! cause it's really very fun. some more we don't have to video our drills. don't need to waste time do those video-ing stuff. work hard oh! lols

ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL BAND MEMBERS!

Wednesday practice is now optional - you can choose whether to come or not. however, when your section leaders want you to come for practice, please follow their instruction. perhaps your section needs more practice for the upcoming concert, thus wednesday's the best time.

for the recruits - it'll be different:
pls do make it a habit to come for Wednesday practices because of the time constraints on Tuesday &Friday for basic footdrill practice. therefore, Clement &i agreed to scrape off footdrill for both days &move it to wednesdays instead. attendance will be taken. moreover, there'll be games organised by various committee members for bonding session with the Main Band.

Band Rooms opens from 2pm-4pm every Wednesday.
either for individual practice or sectionals ONLY!
(&footdrill for recruits!)
pls, no doing of homework - save air-con!!

plan for every wednesday:
MAIN BAND
2pm-3pm: individual practice or sectionals
3pm-4pm: games by various i/cs (with recruits)

RECRUITS
2pm-3pm: basic footdrill by the Majors
3pm-4pm: games by various i/cs (with Main Band)

hope you guys understand what the wednesday practice's for
&the more people come, the more fun the games would be (:

here's something you should all do during this Christmas holiday..

The alumni, would wish to invite all members of Hillgrove Concert Band to their annual gathering called the 'Annual Pot Luck Dinner'! This year, the event is themed as 'Pot Luck X'mas Party' as part of their usual Christmas celebration.

The event will be on 28 December, next Friday. Each attendee is to pay S$8 and is expected to bring along a x'mas present of value between S$4 - S$10 for an exchange. Please refer to the website @ alumni.hillgroveband.googlepages.com for more details.

Any member who wishes to attend will need to contact me by today, Monday. This is because we need to prepare necesary stuff such as food. I need to collect the money from you all [those who are going] during the next practice and hand them to zhenyu.
